rugby retires you in your early thirties. so a prop and scotland's record try scorer built the second career between test matches

Pierre Schoeman is a Scotland prop with 50 caps. Duhan van der Merwe is Scotland's all-time record try scorer. Between them: three Lions call-ups, 100-plus Tests, and a fact every professional athlete carries — the sport retires you whether you're ready or not. An RPA survey found nearly half of retired players in financial difficulty within five years. Their answer is already trading: a whisky company with six sell-out releases in 24 months, run hands-on with their wives, between Test windows.

The startup story begins in a shared room in 2012. Two South African teenagers — Schoeman from Nelspruit, van der Merwe from George — roomed together as under-18 players, then separately made the same 10,000-mile migration: to Edinburgh, to Scotland caps, to the Lions — van der Merwe twice. One became a cornerstone of the front row; the other became the most prolific try scorer in Scottish history — 35 in 52 Tests, one clear of Darcy Graham. The company they founded is their biography with an ABV. Hirundine is named for the swallow that semi-migrates between South Africa and the UK — "It's not a rugby whisky," Schoeman says. "It's two migrations, told in Speyside malt." The structure is the opposite of the celebrity-brand playbook. There's no licensing deal and no agency running it: the pair own Against The Grain Spirits with operator David Whiteford, it began with a whisky tasting and a cask investment, and the family runs deep — Nika van der Merwe and Charissa Schoeman lead brand and community. Two couples, one startup. The operating model is one any founder desk will recognise: drops. Six releases in 24 months — the first sold out in minutes; a perpetual £75 twelve-year-old launched on Halloween; a 370-bottle Legacy Edition, every bottle hand-signed, marking the founders' Lions summer; and February's fifteen-bottle, £2,500 38-year-old — "the 1st XV." Scarcity economics from streetwear, applied to a five-century-old category — and it has earned shelf space at The Balmoral, Gleneagles Townhouse, The Kitchin and Edinburgh Castle itself. The reason they're building now, mid-career, is the industry's quietest statistic. An RPA survey of retired players found 62% experiencing some form of mental health issue and nearly 50% in financial difficulty within the first five years — with 95% needing a second career. Van der Merwe doesn't need the survey — he's lived the precarity twice. In 2022 his club, Worcester Warriors, collapsed beneath him mid-contract; this past year, injuries cost him nine months and, for the first time, his automatic Scotland place. "This club and city are my home," he said on re-signing with Edinburgh through the 2027 World Cup — the migration completed, the second act under construction. Pierre Schoeman, co-founder: "Rugby gives you everything and then it stops, usually before you're 35, usually not on your terms. Most players start thinking about what's next when next has already arrived. We wanted to build the thing we'll walk into — and build it properly, with our own hands, while we still have the shirt." "I become emotional when I see our Hirundine being sold at Edinburgh Castle, symbolising our city and nation, Scotland," says van der Merwe. The 18 and 21-year-old core releases arrive later this year. The founders will be at Murrayfield in November either way.

Trend context

The athlete-founder trend is often superficial, with endorsements disguised as entrepreneurship. Hirundine Whisky offers a counter-narrative: professional rugby players Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman are building a hands-on, trading company mid-career, directly addressing the sport's rarely discussed crisis of post-retirement financial and mental health struggles. This genuine operational commitment, evidenced by sell-out drops and family involvement, positions them as rare examples of athletes creating a sustainable second act before their playing careers end, offering a compelling story of proactive transition in a challenging industry.

About Hirundine Whisky

Why we exist

We saw a Scotch whisky industry often inaccessible and defined by rigid, unapproachable traditions. Our conviction is that exceptional whisky should be for everyone, fostering genuine connection and telling authentic stories beyond the bottle. We exist to open up this world, making heritage relevant for a new generation.

How we do it

We meticulously source and independently bottle rare, character-driven Speyside single malts, focusing on unique cask finishes and transparent provenance. Our process prioritizes quality over volume, building a community around shared experiences and honest narratives, rather than relying on traditional marketing. This hands-on approach ensures each release is a distinct journey.

What we do

Hirundine Whisky independently bottles characterful Scotch under the 'Against the Grain' collective. Our flagship is a 12-year-old Speyside single malt, American oak ex-bourbon matured, offering vanilla, honey, and citrus notes. We also cultivate a community that blends whisky appreciation with lifestyle and sport, making each release a shared experience.

Why it matters

Hirundine represents a new wave challenging Scotch whisky's traditional gatekeepers. Founded by international rugby stars, we're leveraging a unique blend of sport, community, and independent bottling to democratize access and appeal. This isn't just about whisky; it's about a cultural shift making a heritage industry relevant and inclusive for a global, modern audience.

Who it's for

Hirundine targets a new generation of whisky drinkers: those aged 25-45 who value authentic experiences, quality without pretension, and community. This includes sports enthusiasts, lifestyle consumers, and individuals seeking a modern, inclusive entry point into Scotch, moving beyond traditional, exclusive narratives.

Proof points

• Retail Presence: Hirundine is officially stocked at iconic Scottish heritage sites, including the Edinburgh Castle Whisky and Finest Food Shop and the official Stòr online shop for Historic Environment Scotland. • Exclusive Limited Editions: The "Hirundine Legacy Edition" (a 15-year-old Speyside single malt) successfully launched with a highly limited run of only 370 bottles, each hand-signed by founders Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman. • Industry Partnership: The brand secured a high-profile two-year partnership with Edinburgh Rugby, establishing Hirundine as a central feature of the club's commercial and community engagement strategy.

Traction & credibility

Founders Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman, international rugby stars, have established Hirundine as a respected independent bottler under the 'Against the Grain' collective. Their story was featured on Scran podcast. Early releases leveraged the 'Bevvy' whisky discovery app's image recognition for direct-to-consumer engagement and market data.

Scotland's Record Try Scorer Duhan van der Merwe and Test Prop Pierre Schoeman Build Whisky Company While Still Playing

The story

Two South African-born Scotland internationals, Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman — roommates at 18, both called up for the British & Irish Lions in 2025 (van der Merwe's second tour) — are building their post-rugby lives while still in the shirt. Their whisky company, Hirundine Whisky, is named for the bird that migrates between their two countries, run with their wives and operating partner David Whiteford. The company has seen six sell-out releases in 24 months, ranging from a £75 core malt to a fifteen-bottle £2,500 edition.

Why it matters

Nearly half of retired rugby players hit financial difficulty within five years; 62% face mental health struggles; 95% need a second career. The standard answers are punditry or a pension gap. Building a real trading company mid-career — not endorsing one — is the road almost nobody takes, because Test rugby consumes everything. One founder has already lived the alternative: his previous club collapsed beneath him mid-contract. That's precisely what makes it a story.

Who does it impact

Every professional athlete staring at the cliff gets a working example instead of a warning. Founders get the reminder that constraint breeds structure — this company ships on a Test calendar. Startup desks get characters their readers haven't met, including the most prolific try scorer in Scottish history. And rugby gets a rare good-news transition story in a genre that mostly produces cautionary ones.

Proof points

Hirundine Whisky has achieved six sell-out releases in 24 months, with the first selling out in minutes. This includes 370 hand-signed bottles of the 'Legacy Edition' and fifteen £2,500 decanters. The brand is listed at prestigious venues including The Balmoral, Gleneagles Townhouse, The Kitchin, and Edinburgh Castle. Between them, founders Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman have earned over 100 international caps, a national try-scoring record, and three British & Irish Lions call-ups – all while building the company.
