Halo Studio launches 'The Secret is Bart' campaign for Bart Ingredients Co.

Bristol-based strategic brand agency Halo has launched 'The Secret is Bart', a new integrated campaign for herbs and spices brand Bart Ingredients Co. The campaign, which begins its extensive digital-first release this Autumn ahead of a Q1 2027 TV debut, aims to disrupt the commodity-driven category and support Bart's recent launch into Sainsbury’s, directly addressing the challenge faced by challenger brands competing against dominant players and growing own-label alternatives.

In a category dominated by established players and own-label alternatives, Bart Ingredients Co. faced the challenge of cutting through noise and building lasting brand equity. Arnold Monteith, Marketing Manager at Bart, explained: 'The herbs and spices category is incredibly commodity-driven. We’re competing for limited shelf space against the biggest name in the market and hard-working own-label alternatives, so when we secured our place in Sainsbury’s, we wanted to disrupt the status quo.' Halo's approach, aimed to create a distinctive and memorable platform that moves beyond generic product messaging. The campaign's central narrative, featuring a frantic family hunt for a priceless recipe, is designed to imbue the brand with intrigue and emotional resonance. Nick Ellis, Creative Partner & Founder at Halo, commented on the strategy: 'It takes bold creativity from clients to make distinctive work, and the Bart team have shown plenty of it. For challenger brands, there’s always a temptation to play it safe and settle for being the other option on shelf. Bart has much bigger ambitions than that.' Ellis added, 'We’re incredibly proud of the TV spot and of how STORM+SHELTER brought this strange, eccentric world to life. But this is bigger than one campaign. ‘The Secret is Bart’ is a platform we can keep building on for years to come.' The campaign, produced in collaboration with Bristol-based STORM+SHELTER, begins with an extensive digital-first release in Autumn 2026, setting the stage for its first major TV spot in Q1 2027. Nick Patterson, Co-CEO at STORM+SHELTER, noted: 'Man, what a fun project! We get pumped up whenever the perfect combo comes along of an exciting creative and a team that wants to make great work.' This integrated approach demonstrates how challenger brands can leverage bold, distinctive creative work to build brand equity and stand out in competitive, commodity-driven markets.

Trend context

The 'Secret is Bart' campaign directly addresses the growing 'Challenger's Dilemma' facing FMCG brands in the UK. With supermarket own-label products now holding a record 52% market share, challenger brands like Bart Ingredients Co. are under increasing pressure to build distinctive brand equity and justify their premium over cheaper alternatives. Halo's work for Bart demonstrates a strategic response to this market shift, leveraging creative distinction to secure shelf space and consumer loyalty in a highly competitive, commodity-driven category.
