Deep Real unveils 'medium after video': real people, interactive, no AI or deepfakes
In the year Hollywood, Sacramento and Washington are writing the rules for synthetic humans, a Los Angeles founder has built the one interactive format those rules never touch — because it never makes one. Deep Real films a real person once and makes the footage navigable: ask a question by voice or text and you get that person's real, filmed answer, retrieved rather than generated. Nothing synthesised, nothing that can put words in anyone's mouth, and a US patent for the way it works granted five weeks before ChatGPT existed.
Two dates frame the story. On 30 September the Governor of California must sign or veto SB 1111 and SB 1050 — two bills that write "digital replica" into state law and require adverts built on a synthetic performer to say so. On 1 July SAG-AFTRA's new contract came into force with, in its chief negotiator's words, rules to ensure "synthetics remain the exception in our industry instead of the rule." Both are attempts to police a technology that fakes people.
Deep Real does not fake people. It is not an AI company and its product is not a chatbot, an avatar or a clone. It is a new medium, sitting between the two things the internet already has — video you can only watch, and simulations that can only pretend — and it works like this. A person sits down and is filmed, properly, answering the questions people actually ask them: how they trained, what they were afraid of, what they would tell their younger self. Those filmed answers are structured into what the company calls a living story world. A viewer asks a question, in their own words, and the system retrieves the real filmed answer and plays it. The cut between one answer and the next is hidden by a transition the company calls the Invisible Cut — the viewer's own camera image briefly fills the screen as the next segment loads — and that transition is the subject of US Patent 11,483,494, granted on 25 October 2022. OpenAI released ChatGPT on 30 November 2022.
The consequences follow from the design. Because every reply is a recording, the person can never be made to say something they did not say. Because nothing is generated, there is no hallucination to guard against and no synthetic performer to disclose. And because the answers are files rather than inferences, they are delivered the way video is delivered — over standard content networks — rather than the way chatbots are, through expensive real-time computation.
"Every word and every frame on our platform is real, nothing generated, nothing synthesized," Tim Levy writes in the company's manifesto, Closing the Intimacy Gap. Levy is a 20-year entertainment-industry veteran — his film-finance work included Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 — who now runs Deep Real from Los Angeles and hosts the podcast Echoes Across Time. His argument is that reach has never been greater and genuine access has never felt further away, and that the industry's answer to that gap — synthetic versions of real people — is the wrong one.
The evidence of 2026 is on his side. In November 2025 an app that let people talk to AI avatars of dead relatives was called "nightmare fuel" by 22 million viewers of its own launch video. In February Soul Machines, the "digital people" pioneer that raised around $135 million, went into receivership. In March OpenAI announced it was shutting the Sora app, whose likeness feature had drawn objections from Bryan Cranston, SAG-AFTRA and the estates of Martin Luther King Jr and Robin Williams. Meta's celebrity chatbots were caught flirting with users in the stars' names. Every headline in the category has been a backlash, a collapse or a consent patch — an AI voice marketplace here, a likeness-detection tool there. The one path nobody had taken was to stop synthesising the human at all.
Deep Real's first product on that path shipped in October 2023: Messi Connect, an app in which fans could put questions to Lionel Messi and get his filmed replies. Its first commercial focus now is WWE's Natalya "Nattie" Neidhart, the most decorated woman in the company's history — seven Guinness World Records, the latest set in June 2026 for the most submission wins by anyone, man or woman, in WWE history — whose invite-only beta for her first 100 fans is taking applications at deepreal.com/nattie. She is exactly the kind of performer the new rules leave out: wrestlers and athletes are not covered by SAG-AFTRA's contract, and the federal NO FAKES Act, which cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee in June, carries an exemption for sports.
The format is built for anyone whose value is themselves: athletes, cultural icons, faith leaders, experts, educators, and — the use case the manifesto returns to — families. A parent filmed once, answering the questions their children will one day want to ask, is a very different object from a generated parent. One is a recording. The other is a guess.
Trend context
With California lawmakers and SAG-AFTRA actively defining and restricting 'digital replicas,' and federal legislation like the NO FAKES Act gaining traction, the entertainment industry is in a critical debate over synthetic likenesses. Amidst high-profile failures of AI-generated content and a growing demand for 'human-made' experiences, Deep Real's non-generative interactive platform offers a timely alternative, providing authentic human presence without triggering any of the new regulations.
About DeepReal
Why we exist
Deep Real exists because human connection is being drowned by synthetic noise. Audiences don’t need more content; they need trusted access to real people: their stories, decisions, failures and guidance. We refuse to fake the human. We capture authentic presence and make it safely interactive, so wisdom, mentorship and emotional connection can scale without distortion, hallucination or reputational betrayal.
How we do it
We capture the human once, then make their real presence navigable. Deep Real structures filmed interviews, witnesses, moderators and story fragments into a Living Story World. Voice/text prompts trigger semantic retrieval of authentic pre-recorded segments, not generated answers. A patented Invisible Cut and behavioural moderation layer preserve flow, emotional tone and brand safety, delivered via standard CDN economics.
What we do
Deep Real builds and licenses interactive presence experiences for high-trust figures, brands and institutions. We film real people, structure their stories into searchable video libraries, and deliver web/mobile products where audiences ask questions, choose pathways and receive authentic recorded responses. We commercialise through studio production contracts, licensing, revenue share, subscriptions and interactive brand integrations.
Why it matters
If Deep Real vanished, high-trust human connection would stay trapped between two broken choices: passive content that can’t answer and synthetic avatars that can lie. Leaders, athletes, mentors and institutions would remain unable to scale access without surrendering their voice to a black box. Deep Real matters because it protects authentic human presence before fake intimacy becomes the default.
Who it's for
Deep Real is for the devoted follower who has outgrown passive content: the young athlete, founder, believer, fan or student facing a real decision and wishing they could sit with the person they trust most. They do not want a fake avatar. They want access: guidance, stories and presence from the real human they may never meet.
Proof points
Deep Real is built on 7 years and $30M of R&D, including a £10M, 3-year Messi Connect development cycle. It has a granted US patent for its Invisible Cut transition system, delivers 90% of interactions within ~2 seconds, and claims a 500x delivery-cost advantage versus real-time generative video: $0.0001/sec CDN delivery versus up to $0.05/sec inference.
Traction & credibility
Deep Real's credibility starts with its technology heritage: a multi-year cycle building and stress-testing the architecture for the Lionel Messi brand — one of the world's highest-value personal identities — alongside a granted US patent for its core Invisible Cut system. The signing of Natalya Neidhart marks Deep Real's first contracted talent in the WWE and sports-entertainment ecosystem, and the first live test of the format with a major wrestling personality.

Talking points
The asset
Not AI. Not a deepfake. Not a clone. Deep Real built the medium after video — a real person, filmed once, interactive for ever.
By 30 September the Governor of California will have decided whether to sign two bills that put the words "digital replica" and "synthetic performer" into state law. SAG-AFTRA's contract has been policing synthetics since 1 July. The NO FAKES Act is waiting for floor time in the Senate. Every one of those instruments exists to control a technology that fakes real people — and every one leaves the same gap: the athletes, wrestlers, creators, clergy and teachers who are not union members and whose likenesses are the most exposed of all.
A Los Angeles founder built the medium that makes the whole question moot. Deep Real films a real person once — hours of properly shot answers to the questions people actually ask — and structures the footage so that a viewer can put a question in their own words and get that person's real, filmed reply. Nothing is generated. The cut between one answer and the next is hidden by a patented transition, the Invisible Cut, in which the viewer's own camera image fills the screen for the instant the next segment loads. The patent, US 11,483,494, was granted on 25 October 2022, five weeks before ChatGPT was released to the public.
Tim Levy spent twenty years in the entertainment business, including the finance behind Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3. His manifesto, Closing the Intimacy Gap, makes the pledge in one line: "Every word and every frame on our platform is real, nothing generated, nothing synthesized." The company's first product, Messi Connect, shipped in October 2023 with Lionel Messi's filmed answers. Its first commercial focus now is WWE's Natalya "Nattie" Neidhart — seven Guinness World Records, the latest in June 2026 for the most submission wins by anyone in WWE history — whose invite-only beta for her first 100 fans is taking applications at deepreal.com/nattie.
The design does three things no synthetic format can. The person cannot be made to say anything they did not say. There is nothing to hallucinate, so there is nothing to moderate after the fact. And because every answer is a file rather than an inference, it is delivered the way video is — over standard content networks, at video's cost.
Set that against the year the synthetic alternatives have had. 2wai's avatars of dead relatives: "nightmare fuel", 22 million views. Soul Machines: receivership after some $135 million raised. OpenAI's Sora app: shut, after the estates of Martin Luther King Jr and Robin Williams objected. Meta's celebrity chatbots: caught flirting in the stars' names. Deepfaked late-night monologues: spreading faster than platforms remove them. The industry's response has been consent marketplaces, detection tools and disclosure badges — patches on a technology that fakes people. Deep Real's response is not to fake them.
Why it matters
The likeness debate has been framed as a choice between two bad options: lock your face and voice away, or watch them get cloned. Deep Real is the third path, and it is the only one that scales — one filming session becomes always-available access without livestream labour, without burnout, and without a black box that can betray the person it represents. For Los Angeles, the city that lost 41,000 production jobs in three years and is spending September arguing about what AI does to performers, this is the local company whose answer is: nothing, because it never touches them.
Who does it impact
Performers and athletes outside union protection — the wrestlers, footballers and creators the contracts and bills leave out. Fans who want the person, not the highlight reel. Institutions that cannot risk a machine speaking for them: churches, universities, hospitals, museums. Families who would rather have a parent's real filmed answers than a generated approximation. And brands, for whom a format with no synthetic performer means no disclosure obligation under SB 1050 or New York's equivalent.

The victory
Deep Real signs contract with Natalya “Nattie” Neidhart
Deep Real has signed a contract with Natalya "Nattie" Neidhart, creating its contracted entry point into the WWE ecosystem. The project uses Deep Real's interactive presence format to build character-driven narrative experiences around a real performer, using filmed authentic responses rather than generative avatars. The timing matters: sports-entertainment audiences already expect direct access, but talent cannot scale personal interaction safely through live media or AI impersonation — and as the likeness-rights debate sharpens, non-union talent such as athletes and wrestlers are the most exposed of all.
Why it matters
This is not another fan-content deal. It tests whether a global sports-entertainment personality can become an always-available, interactive story world without handing their voice to a black box. Wrestling is built on character, memory and parasocial loyalty, so the friction is clear: fans want closeness, but talent needs brand safety, deterministic control and zero hallucination risk.

They get a way to explore the person, stories and choices behind the performer on their own terms. For talent, the ripple is different: one filming process can create repeatable fan engagement without constant livestream labour, burnout, or reputational exposure to synthetic replies.

The format behind the Natalya Neidhart project has been developed over seven years and $30M of R&D, including a multi-year development cycle for the Lionel Messi brand.
