AVRE Industries Opens Seven Rare 'Operation Chariot' Whisky Bottles for Miniature Release

On Friday, August 7, AVRE Industries will release 98 miniatures of its rare 'Operation Chariot' whisky, priced at £19.99 each. These miniatures were meticulously poured from seven of the original 265 bottles, which were created to commemorate each Commando of the St Nazaire Raid and originally sold for £199. This move allows a wider audience to experience the historically significant liquid while simultaneously increasing the scarcity of the remaining original bottles.

AVRE Industries releases Vat 01 — The 5cl on Friday 7 August: 98 miniatures of its Operation Chariot whisky at £19.99 each. Every one is drawn from the 265-bottle release that marked the 84th anniversary of the St Nazaire Raid. To fill them, the company opened seven of its own remaining £199 bottles. Poured to the last drop, seven bottles made exactly 98 — nothing about the number is decorative; it is simply everything seven bottles held. The liquid is the same 15-year-old Oloroso-matured blended malt, a one-off marriage of casks the company says can never be recreated. The original run matched its bottle count to the 265 Commandos who took part in the 1942 raid. Founders Al Murray and James Holland have been clear the whisky was made for drinking, and the miniature makes that argument at a tenth of the entry price. "Just look at that 1940s bottle... The smoothest whisky I have ever tasted. It's so good it's dangerous," says Murray. Co-founder James Holland adds: "Opening seven of our last bottles stung for about a minute. Then we remembered the point — whisky honours people when it's drunk, not when it sits in a cabinet. The 98 exist so more people can raise a glass to the 265." Spirits writer Laurie Black of the Bevvy app has described the whisky as "gorgeous deep colour, quite soft autumnal notes on the nose, that is a stunning drop." Few of the original 265 remain — and opening seven has made every one of the rest rarer. The 98 go on sale exclusively at avreind.com on Friday. When they're gone, the only way to taste Operation Chariot is a full bottle, while any remain.

Trend context

The Scotch industry faces significant headwinds, with one in five distilleries in financial distress and spirits duty up 17% in three years. In this challenging market, AVRE Industries' release of £19.99 miniatures from its rare 'Operation Chariot' whisky offers a strategic response to the high barrier of entry for premium, unseen spirits. This move not only allows a wider audience to experience a historically significant liquid but also leverages the growing interest in rare whisky miniatures, providing a tangible taste-first solution that builds trust and addresses the dilemma of opening a collector's bottle.

About AVRE Industries

Why we exist

We exist to bring history back to life—properly. Not as nostalgia, but as something you can wear, use, and pass on. Too much of what’s made today is disposable, stripped of meaning and built to be replaced. We believe the opposite—that the stories, materials, and craftsmanship of the past still matter. AVRE exists to recreate those moments in small, considered batches—so each piece carries history, purpose, and permanence.

How we do it

We meticulously deconstruct genuine WWII garments to create authentic patterns, then rebuild each piece using the finest British-sourced materials and specialist fabrics. Production is in small, non-repeated batches in the UK, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern tooling. Each release is deeply researched, telling the real stories of the units and moments behind the originals. 10% of profits support veteran charities.

What we do

We design and produce small-batch garments based on original WWII clothing—recreated with accuracy, craftsmanship, and modern materials.

Why it matters

Because most of what we wear today is designed to be replaced. It has no story, no meaning, and no reason to last. AVRE is the opposite. Each piece is tied to a real moment in history—worn by people who lived it—and rebuilt with the same intent: to endure. So when you wear it, you’re not just putting on a jacket. You’re carrying a story that’s already proven it matters.

Who it's for

Our audience is discerning individuals, typically aged 35-65, who actively seek out heritage-quality goods and invest in fewer, more meaningful pieces. They are often collectors, history enthusiasts, or those who appreciate artisanal craftsmanship and the provenance of what they own, prioritising enduring value over fleeting trends or brand logos.

Proof points

Since launching in 2024, we have donated over £2,000 to veteran charities. We have successfully released three unique, sold-out batches of 200 units each, demonstrating strong demand for our limited-edition pieces. Our customer base has grown to 10k discerning individuals, with 20% repeat purchasers.

Traction & credibility

We’re not built for rapid scale. AVRE is a long-term project—focused on making enduring products, not chasing growth. Despite that, our pieces have found their way to a small group of notable customers, including Jamie Oliver, James May and Charley Boorman.

AVRE Industries Releases 98 Miniatures of 'Operation Chariot' Commando Whisky, Making Original Bottles Rarer

avreind.com/products/vat-01-miniature

The story

On Friday 7 August, AVRE Industries, known for its meticulously recreated WWII garments, expands its historical storytelling into spirits with the release of Vat 01 — The 5cl. This limited edition comprises 98 miniatures, priced at £19.99 each, meticulously poured from seven of the remaining 265 bottles of its original £199 'Operation Chariot' whisky. The 15-year-old Oloroso-matured cask marriage was initially created for the St Nazaire Raid's 84th anniversary, with one bottle dedicated to each Commando. The release of these 98 miniatures not only makes the rare original bottles even scarcer but also offers a unique opportunity for a wider audience to experience this historically significant liquid.

Why it matters

In a premium whisky market where one in five Scottish distilleries faces financial distress and duty has risen 17% in three years, the £199 price point for an unseen bottle presents a significant conversion challenge. AVRE's response is to strategically sacrifice some of its product's inherent scarcity by offering miniatures. This approach sells certainty — allowing consumers to taste the actual liquid, not a lookalike batch — and resolves the dilemma its own product created: whether collectors should keep the bottle sealed on a shelf or open it to enjoy. This move also allows AVRE to extend its unique brand of historical authenticity into a new category, leveraging its founders' deep historical expertise.

Who does it impact

The We Have Ways audience — 50 million downloads — gets a way in at £19.99. Whisky writers get a story they can actually taste. Gift buyers get a pocket-sized piece of the raid. And anyone holding a full bottle watches it get scarcer in real time.

Proof points

The release consists of 98 miniatures, drawn from seven of the 265 original bottles, priced at £19.99 compared to the full bottle's £199. The whisky has received praise, with co-founder Al Murray describing it as 'The smoothest whisky I have ever tasted' and Laurie Black of Bevvy calling it 'a stunning drop'. This follows three previous AVRE product releases (garments), all of which sold out, demonstrating strong demand for our limited-edition, historically-inspired offerings.
